This page is meant to answer a few basic questions about what Mennonites believe. It is meant be very basic.
Quite simply we believe that the Bible is God's
inspired Word to man containing no errors. We
don't base our beliefs on any other books or men.
We seek to apply the teachings in the Bible to
our lives in a child like way (that is in a simple
faith). For example, in John 13:14 Jesus says
"If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed
your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's
feet." We do this following our communion service
remembering that Jesus was teaching us to humble
ourselves and serve others. This is not fulfilled
simply in the feet washing but in our day to day
lives as well.
We are also well known for our practicing I
Cor. 11:5 "But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth
with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head."
That is why our women wear a head covering. To
keep ourselves free from evil (foul language,
violence, nudity, etc) we do not have television
or radio. While we do not believe any of this
earns our salvation we believe our obedience to
all of God's Word is the result of our salvation.
Mennonites are similar to Amish in many respects.
We differ primarily on our understanding of Romans
12:2a "And be not conformed to this world". To
the Amish this means not having cars, electricity,
telephones, etc. We Mennonites believe this is
more limited to not conforming to things that
are evil or things that can draw us away from
a close relationship with God. We do not feel
electricity or cars necessarily do this so we do
not have a problem with them. However, this again
is why we do not have television. Television can
be a source of much evil that can draw a person
away from a close relationship with God.
